That's reassuring, at least for me.

This sounds like a 3Com problem.  The cards were likely shipped
   unprogrammed
   programmed marginally so that they were erased after a few hours, or
   put through ionizing radiation (do they glow in the dark ;-O)

It's reassuring because it means that a driver or diagnostic didn't
accidentally erase the EEPROM.
