[vortex] 3com vortex questions

Where can I find information on whether there is
support for linux slackware driver for my new Dell
which has a 3com 10/100 mini PCI adapter
using EL556nd5.sys driver for windows
it seems to be the vortex card, some form of it anyhow.
I'm using linux 2.2.16 (Slackware 7.1)
I can't seem to get the stuff off the vortex support pages to work.
the RPM did absolutely nothing (literally!) I typed the RPM install
commands, but it didn't change a single file, or extract anything.
just returned to the command line. ??
