I suspect the power management (ACPI) to be the cause. The driver
itself didn't change much between 2.4 and 2.6.

... and also does not complain about reading the EEPROM. Not being
able to read data from the card is a typical symptom of power related
problems.

Try booting with acpi=off.
Try updating BIOS and/or modify power related options in BIOS.
