Are you certain that your cable is UTP and paired correctly?

10baseT will work over anything (see the joke RFC for Ethernet over barbed
wire), while 100baseTx requires careful wiring.  The pairing for twisted
pair is not the obvious 1&2, 3&4, 5&6, 7&8.  It is 1&2, 3&6, 4&5, 7&8.
