configuring mtu size in 2.2.x

That's bizarre.   On my laptop and a 3Com PCMCIA NIC I was able to paste 
your command and received no errors.  The messages file was also clean.

It may be a limitation in the driver (or the driver is reflecting a 
hardware limitation) about the MTU size.  But that's just speculation.
