Compaq 5686

The Compaq 5686 has a partial implementation of the 21143 chip on the
system board.  Apparently there is no MII tranciever and is capable of
10baseT only.  I cannot get the tulip driver in any of it's versions to
work.  I tried different options when loading the module, but the only
one to get the active led to light is autosense.  Ifconfig shows a valid
NIC address, IRQ, and IO address.  No link led with a known good net
connection.  Am I doomed with this chip?
