OK, this won't shed too much more light on anything without further
probing, but here's something interesting. Below are snippits from the
output of dmesg on two of my boxes. The first is from my box at work
and the second is from my box at home. Both machines are nearly
identical (everything is the same hardware-wise except for SCSI
controller, NIC, hard disks, video controller, and RAM quantity):

work box (version 4.1)
======================
Linux Tulip driver version 0.9.15-pre6 (July 2, 2001)
PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:09.0
eth0: ADMtek Comet rev 17 at 0xd884f000, 00:20:78:12:C2:2B, IRQ 10.

home box (version 2.0)
======================
Linux Tulip driver version 0.9.15-pre6 (July 2, 2001)
PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:09.0
eth0: Lite-On PNIC-II rev 37 at 0xe084f000, 00:A0:CC:E3:8F:54, IRQ 10.

Both NICs are LNE100TX cards, with differnet chips (obviously). (One
thing that confuses me here: If both are LinkSys cards, why are the
first 3 bytes of the MAC different? hrrrm). I have had zero problems
(*knocks on wood*) with the PNICII card at home which is the same
revision card as the one I used at work and had loads of problems with.
Kernel versions on both boxes are identical as well (2.4.7-pre6). Here
is the diff between my home kernel config and work kernel config (after
comments are stripped out and both are sorted):

kw@foo[pts/1]:~$ diff home-config work-config
23d22
< CONFIG_DRM=y
26d24
< CONFIG_FILTER=y
71a70
> CONFIG_SOUND_OSS=m

Nothing suspicious there.  :/

Regards,
kw
