Mea culpa maxima. All problems solved, or so it seems.
As it turns out, I seem to have had a duplex mismatch due to
misconfigured NICs. I apologize for any inconvenience I might have
caused.
I have upgraded all machines to kernel 2.4.20-pre7 (applied Adrian
Bunk's patch to drivers/video/Config.in, so that 'make xconfig' works)
and reenabled autonegotiation on the NICs. Rtl8139.c worked unreliably
with 2.4.18-3 (RH7.3 stock kernel; it did transfer but the interface
stopped working reproduceably under heavy load after a couple of hundred
megs transferred without giving any messages,) and not at all with
2.4.20-pre7 (it loads and doesn't give any errors in /var/log/messages ,
but the interface does not establish a connection) for me.
Thanks Joerg for taking the time.
