I've had similar problems as well.  My highly technical solution
(after having installed about 16 machines all over the place with
these *(&^$&%(* chips in them) was to switch to 3com 905b cards,
which are (a) (much) more expensive and (b) seem to work better.
I've got a bunch of intel cards, and I had a problem with one of
them once, but it didn't happen again, so empiricly speaking the
intel offers have been pretty good (it's a sample set of about 5
misc 10/100 PCI cards, so it's not a lot to go on).

I've got a bunch on RTL8139 cards on hand now, so I'm still
keeping on eye on the driver situation :).
