That turned out to not be the problem, as the server stopped responding again
two days ago.  There was a more recent, more promising posting on keeping an
`emergency ring buffer' ...  I'd like to see how that turns out.

There's also a 1.08 driver around (?)  Except I can't find it anywhere ...
I'll have to look into that later.  (I'm probably just being dense.)
