Trouble in Gateway Solo 5100 docking station

I have a Gateway Solo 5100 with a docking station with 2 PCI slots. 
I got an EEPro100+ (82558B is what is written on the chip) and I cannot get it 
to work reliably.

The eepro100.o module (in 2.0.35) detects the card and checks it out OK, but 
when I try and set it up with ifconfig the whole system locks up hard about 4 
times out of 5 (apparently randomly). Catrl-alt-del doesn't work and mouse 
tracking is lost.

I see the same behaviour in Windows 98, even with recent drivers.

Anybody got any clues?
