they have physical switches (in addition to kbd-based switching), and the
*switch* has always responded to the keyboard, just the switch itself sends
wacky things to the attached system occasionally.  and again, non-fatal
problems.

indeed.  and i guess you could do the same with PCs as long as they
run linux, what with serial console...unless you get stuck in bios
for some reason (as my asus p2000c (i think?) boards often do on rbeoot)
but for a mixed-environment without serial console support...
