Your eeprom is configured to force full duplex.

The permanent fix is to reconfigure the eeprom
to not force any particilar mode.  3com have a
dos-based tool at ftp://ftp.3com.com/pub/nic/3c90x/3c90xx2.exe
which allows you to do this.
