More or less. Apparently, the embedded ethernet controller
(eth0, an Intel Pro/100 VM) was recognized by RH7 with the
wrong driver. As a consequence, the initialization of eth0
failed at startup and no eth0 device was created. Then, the
initialization of the Boomerang correctly loaded 3c59x but,
since the initialization of the embedded adapter failed, the
created device was named eth0 instead of eth1. Of course,
eth0 got the wrong IP address, no eth1 was seen, etc...

The correct driver for the embedded Intel adapter is e100.o
(not found on RH7). I found the source code of this driver on
the Intel site and rebuilt it (many compilation problems, but
this is another story).

After installing e100.o, eth0 (the embedded adapter) is correctly
initialized and 3c59x correctly creates an eth1. And everything
is fine. So, the culprit was the Intel Pro/100 VM, not the
Boomerang.

There was no conf.modules.

They were correct.

Thank you Bogdan for your help,
