You don't need to load 8390 for the 3c900.
The only 3Com card that needs the 8390.o core is the very old 3c503.

What is the detection message?
  Are you using the media type that you expect?
Check /proc/net/dev to see if you are sending packets.
  If so, you likely have a routing problem.
Check /proc/interrupts to verify that you are getting interrupts.
