Network-Related (?) Freezes with 2.1.122

I've had about ten complete lock-ups with 2.1.122 in the past three days.
These lock-ups seem to be triggered by network activity.

When I access some sites (for example, www.rpi.edu) my ethernet card loses
contact with the other machine on our local network, a masquerading box running
2.0.35 which connects to the outside world via PPP.

Shortly thereafter, the machine completely freezes unless I quickly down the
network card and unload the 3c59x module. Sometimes there are no logs, but
sometimes I get the following messages for several iterations before the lock-
up:

Relevant hardware information:
3Com 3c900
Crossed over ethernet connection to our masquerade box running 2.0.35
The masquerade box is running a pretty cheap modem

I've dropped back to 2.1.94 which works like a charm with no changes to my
hardware configuration. Attached is my 2.1.122 .config.

Oh, incidentally, I tried turning off all of the "1"'s in /proc/sys/net/ipv4 to
no avail. I also tried recompiling v0.47H of the 3c59x driver (which I've been
successfully using for months with 2.1.94) with 2.1.122. This driver also
brings down the network but it doesn't appear to halt the machine (not
thoroughly tested).
