It's reported on the 'switch'.  This 8-port device was onlly like $250
and says 'switching hub' on the box.

Okay, that I didn't know.  It seems to perform well (at least better than
a hub would).

This is the only information I have.  I saw it reported on bugtraq a few
weeks ago.  It does sound weird.
