I repeat (or Donald Becker might do it!): there is no need to force the
media type. The problems that you might have encountered were probably
caused by new cards (905C) using an old driver (<= 2.2.15).
And there was a report suggesting that the link is established correctly
(lights on the switch) which eliminates this as a cause.
The best ideea to check whether the card works somehow is to use tcpdump
to see if there is any traffic received (and run for more than a minute to
account for the STP delay) after the network is brought up. At the same
time, try to ping from a Windows host (also for more than a minute).
