At the suggestion of Narendra Sankar, I moved the sleep 120 command to
the end of the start section in /etc/rc.d/init.d/network and rebooted
with the machine cabled to the 10/100 mbps switch.  Again, this change
made absolutely no difference, the system cannot see the LAN.  When I
recable to the 10 mbps hub, the system sees the LAN fine.

Thank you for all the suggestions so far.  I'm looking forward to
finding a resolution!
