I had another problem with 3Com 905B (and 3Com 980). I wrote to the list about it but nobody answered. Shortly speaking NIC swithed from 100 b/s to 10 b/s after machine reboot.
Hab was hanged often. After I install 3c90x driver from http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/linuxdownload.htm everything has been working fine. Perhaps it helps you too.
