Thanks, actually, the exact same symptoms occur with or without sound
initialized, no matter which irq I try to use.  As of now, I've disabled
via Windows the IR port, serial port, onboard modem + DSP, and the
parallel port, which should free up IRQs 3, 4, and 7.  No luck on any of
them.  IRQ 9 may be used by the sound system, though it exhibits exactly
the same problems as the other interrupts.

Windows 98 reports that the card uses IRQ 11, as does the CardBus
controller; however this IRQ is absent from the irq scan during the "Intel
PCIC probe"; I only get 3, 4, 7, 9, and 10.  I find it hard to believe
that I have IRQ conflicts everywhere even when many devices have been
disabled.  :/
