Hi,
I apologize to submit what may be a trivial question, but
I have exhausted all support options both from the hardware manufacturers
and from redhat and I need to get the d... network connection to work.
(My Hardware: Gateway E-5200 Pentium II 350MHz dual processor machine.
3COM 905-TX NIC, The card came preinstalled with the machine and I
have no diagnostic software that would run under LINUX)
The installer recognizes the card as a 3COM 509 Vortex card.
I configured the LAN network correctly. Below is the result of
'ifconfig' for eth0
eth0:	Link encap: Ethernet HWaddr 00:10:5A:19:0A:51
	inet addr: 129.24.168.15 Bcast: 129.24.175.255 Mask: 255.255.248.0
UP Broadcast Running Multicast MTU: 1500 metric: 1
	RX packets:0 errors: 0 dropped:0 overruns:0
	TX packets:0 errors:9 dropped:0 overruns:0
	interrupt:11 base address: 0xef00

After installation and rebooting the machine I get
eth0: transmit timed out, tx-status 00 status 0000
'ping candela', however works, 'candela' being the machine name.
A few potential problems I excluded:
1. Is the card defective? No. I have swapped it to another machine and
it works.
2. Is there a cable/connector/port/hub problem? No, I constantly
use the same cable/port on another machine and it works.
3. Is the PCI slot bad? Not likely, I have tried the installation on
two different slots.
4. Is there a resource conflict? The card is on IRQ 10. I have only installed
one other piece of hardware, a SCSI card, which is on IRQ 11.
5. There is no IP address conflict (The address is unique)
6. inetd is started at boot time

Any help will be appreciated. I am ready to throw this $5,000.-
machine out the window.
