Yes, I remember this one...
It told me "disabling eth0" afterwards - then the machine was
unreachable and crashed after about 5 minutes.

Well - Donald Becker told me that the reason could be the PCI
interface of the 486. I had the same machine (486DX4/100,32Meg RAM...)
I could not fix the problem so I upgraded to a Pentium 166. Now it
works without any problems. Try upgrading the Motherboard or try 
another Ethernet-Card - I do not think you will be able to fix this
one.
