Ok, here's the latest data:
1. The suggested fix doesn't work.
2. Unplugging the network cable has no effect on the operation.
3. Adding an active hub to the network solves the problem.
4. Forcing media type '3' (100baseTX) fails when the active hub is in
place. With the hub, the autoselection of media type 0 (10baseT)
works. The cable modem
can only speak 10Mb ethernet, no duplex.
