Yup. Suggestion:

1. Make sure /usr/src/linux is a symbolic link to /usr/src/linux-2.4.0
(or whatever).
2. Create a new directory, /usr/src/linux-2.2.18.
3. Delete the symbolic link /usr/src/linux. Create a new one:
    ln -s /usr/src/linux-2.2.18 /usr/src/linux
4. THEN install the 2.2.18 sources.
