Interrupts are assigned by PCI. Some BIOSes allow you to reserve IRQs for
ISA, so these will not be taken by PCI devices, so you can try to reserve
IRQ 5 for ISA (but be sure that you have another free IRQ line).
However, the hangs that you report might not be interrupt related. Try
running vortex-diag (see http://www.scyld.com/network/vortex.html) before
and after the hang occurs. Also try to get a newer driver (if you haven't
already).
