nway autonegotiation failed with the remote and it fell back to 100mb half
duplex.

This is certainly possible, and would explain your poor performance.
Try unplugging and replugging the cable a couple times. Sometimes
autonegotiation gets screwed up. It's also possible your crossover cable
has a pair mis-wired.
