I used to have this issue.. It's fixed in the current 2.3 (>=48, IIRC) kernels.
In 2.2, it looked like the driver programmed or initalized this card not-quite-right.... I found a work-around that worked like so..
ifconfig eth0 promisc
ping -c 4 <broadcast addy of interface here>
ifconfig eth0 -promisc
Your mileage will probably vary.
