I got the same problem when trying the rtl8139,v1.11 driver from
ftp://ftp.scyld.com/pub/network/netdriver-2.0.src.rpm on my 2.2.16 kernel.
With the v1.07 kernel the driver looses track of what to transmit after
collisions on my heavily loaded network segment, leading to sluggish (or
nonexistant) network performance. Seems like it's time to find a network
card with another chipset...
