[epic] help with two eepro100

Hello to all
I am trying to use two intel NIC in the same machine
I think that all is set up ok
ifconfig reports the currect settings for both cards
yet I cant connect to the network of the second card (eth1)

pinging an address on the eth1's network gives the following errors
"Destination Host Unreachable"  and 
"eth1: Transmit timed out: status 0000  0090 at 0/28 command 0001a000"

this worked well with the two card where different and needed two different
modules drivers. Now that they are both intel NIC and need the same module
it does not work 

background:
duel pent III
NICs are INTEL PCI 82559
redhat 6.2


Any pointers on where to look greatly appr.
