Didn't think it was the driver aswell, and although I could see the card
drop and reinitialise there were no errors logged. Imho, this would mean
the problem was higher than kernel level.

I really should've included more in the first message: we did try an
array of different configurations; id est we switched cables, switched
to a second nic (of the same type), restarted the modem, and even went
as far as asking the isp to check the line and reboot their routers.

Unfortunately, it's now at a clients so downtime would not be welcome,
the only info I can get is to grep the log files. I brought the buggy
card back when we switched it, and tested it in one of our standard
server boxen (dell poweredge), and it worked fine; not the proper
testing environment, but close enough. It does thus suggest it was
something to do with the mobo.
I've attached what info i can get passively, what may be of note is that
the interfaces 2 & 3 (ext nic 1) and 4 & 5 (ext nic 2) share the same
irq's (unsure to what extent this may have caused a problem).
Sorry to bother again, but i've been tasked with coming up with a good
explanation as to the cause of the problem, to report back to the client
and/or compaq.
If there's anything else you think i can do over an ssh connection (ie.
non-physical) to find out more i'd be happy to comply.

Thanks,

Matt
