[eepro100] Intel not working on Linux/FreeBSD, works on NT4

I have a Compaq Deskpro P866 with an Intel EtherPro 100 VM (i82557) card.
When running Windows NT4 everything works fine, but when I tried install
FreeBSD 4.3, the card stopped working under heavy load. (WAIT_FOR_CMD_DONE
syndrome) I then tried to install Mandrake 8.0 (Kernel 2.4.3), and here the
card showed the exact same problem. I tried install the original Intel
drivers (v1.6.6), but the same problem still occured, only with a different
error message. If it wasn't for the fact that it works under NT4, I would
suspect the card itself was broken. I tried the diagnostic tool earlier
discussed on this list, but it didn't turn up anything of use (The card
didn't have the suspend bit set as far as I could see).

Could anybody suggest some solutions?
