Thanks Andrey,

that appears to have fixed the problem, although I'll keep an eye on it for
a few more days. Do you think this problem would be more accentuated on a
100 Mbit connection to
a 10 Mbit connection. I ask because I didn't have this problem with debian
on an old
10 Mbit hub - unfortunatley I don't know what versions I was using.

ftp://ftp.sw.com.sg/pub/Linux/people/saw/kernel/v2.2/
