slow transmission problem

Hi, I'm using an ethernet express 100 adapter which is built into the main
board of an SGI visual workstation 540. Testing the card with ftp,
transfering files onto the computer works fine but downloading from it I
only get about 3kbytes/s transfer rate. I've had this problem with driver
versions 1.06 and 1.08. I tried test version 1.09l but the card does not
function at all with this driver. I believe it is a driver problem
because we don't have this problem running the system under windows NT.
The information the kernel gives at boot up about the adapter is as
follows:

eth0: Intel EtherExpress Pro 10/100 at 0xa200, 08:00:69:0F:4B:43, IRQ 19.
Board assembly 123456-120, Physical connectors present: RJ45
Primary interface chip DP83840 PHY #1.
DP83840 specific setup, setting register 23 to 0422.
  General self-test: passed.
  Serial sub-system self-test: passed.
  Internal registers self-test: passed.
  ROM checksum self-test: passed (0x04f4518b).
  Receiver lock-up workaround activated.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
