Because, in that case in particular, you should just ask for your 10 
small VMs to be killed and 1 big VM to be brought up.

The inefficiency your are going to get with splitting a physical machine 
into VMs and then patching it back together with this kind of setup will 
be pretty absurd, I'd bet.
