The only thing you need to do to change the timeout default of a boot 
floppy is edit syslinux.cfg and change the first line "default linux" to 
"default ks".  I also usually change the timeout to something really short 
-- long enough to do something else if I want, but not long enough that I 
get annoyed waiting for it.

In any case, no mkinitrd involved.
