Or just get it off of nfs all together. Networks have a nasty way of
getting in the way of optimal performance. Of course there are logistics
issues (ie. rsync'ing data files) and convenience, but it might mean a
huge performance payoff. Sometimes the biggest files are invariant, so
it isn't much of a problem.
