Holy moley, earlier I was considering sending that exact
quote to this list in response to Mr. Eadline's message :^)
"Soul of a New machine" is terrific book, BTW.
Of course, the "mini" circa 1980 then took three evolutionary branches,
proprietary niche-holders (AS/400, HP 3000, DEC VAX), "Open" Unix
workstations/servers,
and ever-more-powerful PC's. You *could* make the case that IBM
"legitimized" the PC market, I guess, but you'd probably be beaten up by Mac
people.
