Gee, what did they do to the 3Com chips ?

Could you please grab vortex-diag from ftp://ftp.scyld.com/pub/diag and 
show us the output for "vortex-diag -ee" for both interfaces ? You'll 
probably need to use the "-p ioaddr" option; short description at:

http://www.scyld.com/diag/index.html

My guess is that the EPROM of at least on of the chips was modified.
