Hrm. I would expect a line with your layer-3 info inbetween there, but it
isn't. Normal ifconfig shows stuff like:

eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:10:5A:B4:3D:36  
          inet addr:212.189.234.2  Bcast:212.189.234.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING PROMISC MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1

See that inet addr: etc is missing?

Try to assign a ip-address manually, and see what that does.

like this:

ifconfig eth0 212.189.234.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 212.189.234.255 up

If that works: double-check /etc/sysconfig and below for typo's, extra
spaces, missing qoutes etc.
