oh crud, in re-reading i notice i forgot most of the important information..

Redhat 6.2, Dell Optiplex with the 3com 3c920 on the mother board. 

kernel 2.2.14-5 that came with RH6.2 had a driver for 3c509 which seemed to
work fine.

downloaded and compiled kernel 2.2.18, no inherent driver for this card.
downloaded and compiled 3c59x.c and pci-scan.c as per instructions, and
received the errors only when trying to install.
