Check if you are using the autoload feature of the kernel modules.  I
once had the notion that this may be a problem.  E.g. I did not
succeed in loading my 509 card before I did an insmod.  But once the
NIC is loaded, configured, and ifconfig'ed, it should stay put.  So
you still may have another problem. If calling lsmod tells you
"autoclean" then try loading the module before calling the network
script.
