check sum error

The symptoms you describe are, 9 times out of 10,
caused by a mismatch of duplex modes on your
network. (That is: the poor performance! Not sure
about the ROM checksum error!)
I have written drivers for 3COM (and many others) nics
for my company's proprietary operating system and
have come across quite a few unreliable combinations
of 3C90x flavors and switches when it comes to auto-negotiation.
I'm now advising all our customers to pre-configure
their nics (and switch ports) to the required speed and duplex mode.
That seemed to have helped the matter.

Kind Regards,
Paul
