Cyclone 3c905B-TX Locking Problem

Need help with an exasperating problem.  I've installed a PCI-3c905B-TX
card on my system.  I've been able to register the card with the 3c59x
v0.99H driver.  Unfortunately, when I execute the ifup command the
system completely locks.  Can't do any troubleshooting.  In fact I have
to hard boot.  I know the nic is good because this is a dual boot
Win98-Linux system and everything checks out under Windows.  This is
being installed for a cable modem DHCP connection.  Here are the system
specs

OS:  Redhat 5.0 with a 2.0.36-0.7 Kernel
