Well, i ran into the same problems, BUT there is a solution.

I use Linux RedHat 5.1 with kernel 2.0.34. I suppose you've got a 3c905B
(since it's really hard to get a 3c905 NIC). The RedHat Kernel 2.0.34
uses the 3c59x.c driver version 0.99 4/7/98 from Donald Becker
(http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html). This version
driver does not work with the 3c905B. Get the latest driver (i
downloaded 3c59x.c version 0.99E 5/12/98 from
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html), replaced the the
old 3c59x.c with the new one and recompile the kernel (See
/usr/src/linux/README).

Now you've a fully functional full duplex 100Mbs 3c905B NIC under Linux.
