I reported this problem on Wednesday, Oct 9th:

Donald Becker <becker@scyld.com> suggested that I install the driver
versions available at ftp.scyld.com. I did, and that provided temporary
relief, but only temporary:

Bernardo Reino <reinob@gmx.net> suggested that I recompile the kernel
with no APIC support. I did this last Sunday (October 13th) and so
far (7 and a half days at this point) there have been no problems at
all. This doesn't seem to be the only kind of problem with APIC
support in the mainline 2.4 kernels.

Who knows what the future holds, but so far, things are looking good.

Thanks very much to everyone who helped---especially Donald and Bernardo.

I'll attach some information about the system, in case it might be
helpful to someone else who sees the problem. And I suppose I'll be
back for help again, if the problem returns.
