The 486 likely has a non-compliant PCI bus.  It could still work, but
there might be PCI burst problems.

I'm guessing that you have a Jeff Garzik modified driver, and that you
sent email to him.  In defense of maintainers, I've encountered plenty
of user sites that reject or apparently discard my email.  Earlier this
week I was travelling and used a Houston ISP that must have a bad
reputation.  I had composed a bunch of replies off-line, and about half
were bounced.
