2.3.99 and tulip hang

Am using kernel 2.3.99pre2 and am still having tulip card problems.
Other network machine is running 2.2.14 and the same network card,
a 21140 card. The other machine never hangs.
Every hour or so under mild traffic the 2.3.99 network will stop;
"network stop; rmmod tulip; insmod tulip; network start"
will bring back the network. Using the de4x5 module shows the
same ill behavior as the tulip module.
(card just hung while composing this message, no other traffic)

dmesg:
eth0: transmit timed out, switching to 100baseTx-FD media.
NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out
eth0: 21140 transmit timed out, status fc660000, SIA ffffff20 ffffffff
1c09fdc0 fffffec8, resetting...
Repeated until cleared by the module unloading, then:

Linux Tulip driver version 0.9.4 (Feb 28, 2000)
eth0: Digital DS21140 Tulip rev 34 at 0xec00, 00:60:67:32:69:59, IRQ 11.
eth0: EEPROM default media type Autosense.
eth0: Index #0 - Media 10baseT (#0) described by a 21140 non-MII (0)
block.
eth0: Index #1 - Media 100baseTx (#3) described by a 21140 non-MII (0)
block.
eth0: Index #2 - Media 10baseT-FD (#4) described by a 21140 non-MII (0)
block.
eth0: Index #3 - Media 100baseTx-FD (#5) described by a 21140 non-MII (0)
block.
eth0: MII transceiver #1 config 3000 status 782d advertising 01e1.

Is there any solution to this problem other than a different card?
