I have a mail server exhibiting a strange problem

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:C0:F0:17:62:0F
          inet addr:206.27.45.34 Bcast:206.27.45.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:534554 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:460106 errors:341 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:341
          Collisions:270
          Interrupt:10 Base address:0xb800
every time the carrier and errors on the TX goes up the entire machine
stalls for 5-30 seconds. Any Idea what might cause this ?

This is a Debian 2.0 machine running SMP 2 Pentium 2 333 processors
256M or ram and 2 IDE hard drives.

I am going to try a 3com 905 this weekend and see if it works better.
Before my coworkers chase me and the machine out of the office :)
