Ftp hangs system.

I have the same problem with all kinds of ftp programs. The system just
freezes when I try to ftp certain binary files like .gif or .mb .ma
(mathematica).

There are no error messages of any kind anywhere. Also the system sometimes
just freezes without any obvious reason.

I suspect that this is cause by the ethernet card since it doesn't happen
when I am not docked to the docking station. My Fujitsu Lifebook 656tx comes
with a docking station that contains the ethernet card with a DEC21143.

I would greatly appreciate any help.
